The Euro Info Centre (EIC) of the Federation of Industries of Northern Greece (FING), was responsible for the implementation of the EU Programme ECO DESIGN during 2005. This programme was co-financed by the Directorate-General Enterprise of the European Commission, and was aimed at informing and assisting companies from the electric and electronics sectors in order to prepare them for their compliance to environmental requirements in product design (eco-design).

The issue of Eco Design covers two basic concepts: ecology and economy. For this reason, the optimization of both ecological and economical product design not only reduces the negative effects on the environment, but at the same time contributes to reducing costs and to increasing product profitability and its competitive advantages.

Within the context of the ECO DESIGN programme a pan-European awareness-raising campaign was conducted targeting SMEs in the electric and electronics sectors, covering the following areas:-
- presentation of new EU legislation for energy-using products
- benefits to be gained by companies from adopting eco-design practices
- methods and means of applying EU policy and legislation concerning eco-design
- presentation of eco-design best practice case studies from Greece.

A total of 28 workshops were held in 20 countries throughout Europe, by all the programme partners, from April to September 2005. The EIC Thessaloniki organised the only workshop to be held in Greece within the framework of this programme, which took place on 13 May 2005 in Thessaloniki.
